In 1987 the Ministry of Education in Ghana introduced a restructured education system to replace the old British O and A-levels. The old system offered six years of primary education, four years of middle school and seven years of secondary education before university. The Junior Secondary School (JSS) and Senior Secondary School (SSS) reforms have reduced that time to twelve years, six years in primary, three in JSS and three in SSS. The new SSS reforms have been developed in response to criticism that, in the past this level of education has been overly academic and removed from the country's development and manpower trends. Mfantsipim is a Senior Secondary School.
